Why Monitoring Infection Is A Vital Control Procedure

In all healthcare institutions the importance of monitoring the infection control procedures is well documented. In the media the fear of super bugs such as C-diff an MRSA have been highlighted, meaning that hospitals and other medical centres must face a great deal of public scrutiny in terms of their infection control methods. Part of monitoring the spread of infection is understanding the modes of transmission; by doing this, infection can be controlled more effectively.

The transmission of infection occurs through a number of mediums. Generally these are referred to as inhalation, ingestion, inoculation, contact and transplacental. In lay mans terms these are the transmission of infection by breathing, eating or drinking, by a sharp object or bite, through contact and finally from mother to baby in the womb. This is important in infection control as micro-organisms can utilise one or more of these methods to spread from patient to patient. Naturally limiting these modes of transmission is the ultimate of objective of infection control procedures.

Contact transmission is regarded to be one of the hardest to limit by healthcare professionals. Additionally however, through the monitoring of this mode of transmission, the category has been further subdivided. These sub-categories are direct, in-direct and droplet. These are important in infection control as they relate directly to the behaviour of healthcare staff.

Direct contact is normally through person to person means. In terms of healthcare operations this refers to bathing, the changing of dressings and the use of internal measurement devices. All of these actions carry a risk of spreading infection across wards and hence effective measures must be used to limit the transmission. Today, frequent hand washing is still regarded as the best way to control this type of spread and should be included in a larger, all encompassing monitoring and limiting process.

Indirect transmission on the other hand is transmission by means such as contact with infected surfaces or equipment. This is why any infection control strategy; equipment should be thoroughly cleaned after every use to ensure that indirect transmission does not occur. Additionally this should also include the safe and sterile storage of all equipment to further reduce this form of transmission.

The subcategory, droplet, refers to instances where infection is spread by sneezing or coughing. For healthcare professionals, it is important to remember that the danger distance from the host is around three feet when either coughing or sneezing. In terms of actions that can limit this type of transmission; the wearing of masks is arguably the most successful. However, the masks need to be regularly changed in order to keep spreading down to a minimum.

One of the biggest problems for hospitals and healthcare institutions is that there is always a large amount of susceptible hosts. In terms of a definition, a susceptible host is anyone with a weakened immune system that will be easily infected. Obviously medical professionals should have training in monitoring infection spread and how to keep susceptible hosts to a minimum.

With so much argument over the best ways to control infection in hospitals and medical centres it is understandable that some professionals are unsure of the best course of action to follow. With a wealth of cleaning products out there and so many different methods, it is only through training and knowledge that operatives will be able to make best use of them.

The Secret of the Appendix Revealed

All throughout history, most medical professionals have believed that the appendix had little to no purpose. Recent studies have found that there is actually a purpose to this part of the body!

Conclusive evidence indicates that this part of the body protects us from potential germs that can have a negative impact on the body. In addition to this, it has been discovered that the appendix works to protect germs that are actually considered to be positive and productive for our health. The evidence that surrounds the studies that conclude that the appendix is very beneficial to the body states that the bacteria that is in the appendix is considered to be "good" and actually works to supplement and benefit the natural digestion process.

The appendix is an organ in the body that has never really been related to any type of function in the body. It is actually located in the area where the large intestines work to connect and meet with the small intestines. It sort of resembles a pouch that can be as small as a little less than two inches, or just as long as a little over four inches. While doctors and other types of medical professionals have found small traces of tissue in the appendix that are directly related to immune health, it is only recently that the discovery that this organ may prove to be more of a necessity to the body than once believed.

When food travels in the digestive system, there are small substances that are referred to as "microbes" that assist in actually breaking the food down and distributing nutrients as appropriate in other areas of the body. It is now believed that these microbes are able to function according to the bacterium that resides in the appendix. This bacterium allows the microbes to be healthy and function appropriately. If these turn "bad", there will often be complications when it comes to properly breaking down food that is consumed and distributing nutrients throughout the rest of the body. Furthermore, it will result in toxins accumulating in the body and this can cause many health problems.

When the appendix is functioning properly, it serves other purposes as well. Once waste has left the body, the appendix will release the bacteria that are considered to be "good". The bacterium immediately flocks to the intestines and duplicates itself so that it can eliminate and prevent any bacterium that is considered to be "bad". If unhealthy bacteria are permitted to enter and develop in the intestines, many health complications may occur. One of the most common side effects includes that of diarrhea and similar gastrointestinal complications.

Appendicitis is a life threatening condition that many individuals have or will eventually suffer from. In recent studies that outlined the prevalence of this inflammation that occurs in the appendix, it has been estimated that as many as five hundred individuals in the United States alone suffer and die from this conditions. Nearly five hundred thousand other people are treated and admitted to hospitals on an annual basis due to appendicitis. When one suffers from this condition, having the appendix removed is the most common scenario. Up until recently, though, many thought that removing this organ would not result in any type of negative consequences.

It has been discovered that approximately 80% of the immunity actually resides in the gastrointestinal tract. The appendix works to provide bacteria that is considered positive for the health of the digestive system. If the digestive system is healthy, it means that the immunity of the body will be stronger overall. If the appendix is healthy and left in place, the digestive system will be a breeding ground for health. The immunity will be stronger and less sickness and other health complications will arise throughout the life of the individual.

If at all possible, it is critical to leave the appendix in place at all times. There are many cases, however, when the appendix will need to be removed because it has burst and infection is spilling over into the body. If this happens, it is vital to go ahead and agree with the removal. Not doing so will result in death. It is vital that you know and understand this. You should never, under any other circumstances, have your appendix removed just to do it. By doing so, you are putting your health at risk. This removal, whether needed to sustain life, or done by choice, will definitely lead to health complications. If it is necessary to have the appendix surgically removed, it is likely to experience health complications, but it will sustain your life.

Drug Free Sleep Aids To Improve Your Life

In recent years the American Drug companies have opened a floodgate of drugs onto the American people. Often times the drugs are designed to treat minor irritations, or as more often is the case, disorders that simply did not exist fifteen years ago. And its not that we've recently discovered many of these disorders, its that many of these disorders were invented as a marketing campaign for a nearly useless chemical compound that a drug company has found a use for. Which is not to say that all drugs fall under this terrible category. Plenty of conditions out there warrant the use of drugs, and without these drugs many people would suffer far more than they have to now. The problem lies within the fact that drug companies are now chemically treating lifestyle symptoms, and not just medical conditions.

There are several lifestyle conditions out there that are easily treatable without the use of drugs, and thus, without having the horrible side effects that taking these drugs come with. Medicines for certain types of high blood pressure are treated with drugs that come with risks of death, when all these people really need is just to take it easy, change their diet and learn to breathe properly. Obesity is being treated chemically more and more often, when really proper diet and exercise is the key. It is out of laziness that many people take medical options, such as drugs and liposuction, over a jog, and salad. Sleep aids are handed out to people who are already suffering from compound drug and physical addictions, in order to make them fall asleep. But these sleep aids are often just as addictive (if not more so) than the caffeine, sugar, and television that they're already addicted to.

Sleep aid drugs do not actually promote healthy, natural sleep. They are sedatives; they sedate you. Sedation and sleep are not the same things, though they do appear the same. But you have to ask yourself, "does my body go through the proper REM cycles under sedation that it does with healthy natural sleep?" "Am I really rested when I'm using sedatives instead of sleep?" Just because a chemical tranquilizer knocks you out for eight hours does not mean that your body is going through its sleep cycles for eight hours.

Certain things happen to your body when you sleep. One of sleeps functions is to, in essence, check all of your systems and make sure they're working properly, rejuvenate the ones that may be lacking in some way, and basically run your brain through a sort of re-boot and systems check process. However, sedatives sedate your whole body, not just the part that's keeping you awake. There are healthy, natural ways to enhance your sleep cycles, without the use of drugs. These are lifestyle changes that will actually improve more than just your sleep!

Caffeine is a highly addictive drug, more so than most illegal narcotics, but because it doesn't have any mind-expanding properties, and because it is so widely capitalized on by major US companies the FDA will not ban its use. Remember, caffeine was originally used as a substitute for cocaine when it's use was banned by the FDA because of its mind-altering properties. Caffeine is equally addictive and chances are, if you're having problems sleeping, you probably have an addiction to caffeine. This is a good place to start. It is a tough drug to beat, but it can be done. Getting yourself off of caffeine will drastically improve your sleep, and will also (because of better sleep) improve your wakefulness in the morning as well.

Another issue with healthy natural sleep is modern distractions; lights, television, music, or video games. When you sleep you should try to make the room you are in as dark as possible. This means no television or games in the bedroom. Sure they're great, but they're also keeping you up! The darker the room, the more naturally you will sleep, and the fewer the distractions the more restful you will remain. Music can be good if it remains consistent, but often times music contains lyrics, drastic changes, crescendos and other anomalies that disrupt sleep. If you feel you need some sound in the room, often to block out sounds of traffic, try a white noise machine. Or, if you're really adventurous get a CD of nature sounds that will loop continuously for hours. These are great because, not only can they help block out disrupting traffic sounds, they also simulate realistic sounds of nature that have been shown to be soothing, and rejuvenating to the listener, and they make great sleep aids that will deeply impact your dreams, thus invigorating your REM cycles. Nature sound CDs can also be used for meditation or for creating a peaceful ambiance to your house or office during the day as well.

Another lifestyle change that can help improve your sleep is diet change. Yes, I know; everything these days wants you to change your diet and exercise habits. There is a reason for that. By improving your diet and increasing the amount of physical activity that you get every day you will sleep better! And it will decrease your weight as advertised! Plus, improving your diet and exercise can help lower your blood pressure, as will learning good breathing techniques. The reason there is so much emphasis placed on diet and exercise is because it works, because that's what our bodies have evolved to do! That is how we are meant to function, and when we neglect those things, health and sleeping problems will occur!

Get rid of McDonalds, get rid of Burger King, they have little nutritional value and are doing nothing to improve your life! Start eating high quality foods. It's not expensive. Based on your digestive system, and on the design of your teeth, your body is built to have a roughly 30% meat diet. A soy and horse by-product burger from McDonalds is poor substitute for what your digestive system is actually craving. Start preparing foods at home. It is cheaper to buy groceries for a week than eat out every night, and the foods you eat will be higher in quality as a result.

All of these things, if applied, will greatly increase the quality of your sleep, and as a result will increase the quality of your life. Bad habits are hard to break, but good habits will make it worth the effort! Eat better, exercise better, sleep better, and live better! You won't regret the changes you make!
